Why ElevateHER?

ElevateHER recognises the importance of intersectionality and the need for tailored support to address the specific challenges faced only by Black and Brown women in leadership.

It is no secret that the road to leadership for women regardless of race is an uphill task, countless of studies, statistics and of course the aspirational goals of many organisations seeking to close the gender bias gap. For Black women, this challenge is compounded even further by additional layers of complexity. Not only do Black women contend with the pervasive biases and barriers faced by women in general, but also find themselves having to navigate unique sets of obstacles rooted in racial discrimination and cultural expectations.

This intersection of race and gender creates a “double jeopardy” effect, where Black women must overcome both gendered and racial biases.

Navigating leadership as Black and Brown women is a journey marked by resilience, strength, and an unyielding commitment to excellence. But it’s also a path fraught with unique challenges that many others in leadership simply do not face. From the “cement ceiling” that often feels impenetrable as you find yourself hitting invisible barriers that make it hard to advance, even when you’re performing at the top of your game., to the pervasive unconscious bias that questions your capabilities, this journey can be exhausting.

For many Black and Brown women, the weight of intersectionality compounds the struggle. You might be dealing with the pressures of being an immigrant, having a devout religious faith, balancing the dual responsibilities of single parenting, or managing the delicate dynamics of being a breadwinner—especially when you’re more accomplished or earn more than your partner. Add to that the cultural expectations that demand you succeed while still adhering to traditional family roles, the exhausting reality of code-switching where you are constantly adapting your behaviour to fit in to be accepted by diminishing your authentic self. Then there’s the painful attempts to refine your accent to sound like more white or to be better understood and the burden of constantly wearing a mask to fit into predominantly white spaces.

These unique set of challenges can feel crippling, overwhelming and isolating.

This is where ElevateHER steps in to tackle these pain points head-on and offer you the support, strategies, and space to thrive.
